Salvation Army Building (first) is built.

The headquarters for the first Salvation Army chapter in Boston, it is located at 886 Washington Street. The organization was founded in London in 1865, and its first Boston chapter was organized in in the West End in 1880. Its purpose is to provide food and clothing to those in need. The organization first utilizes its red kettles in Boston in 1897, moves to a new building (second) on Washington Street in 1940,* and sells the original Washington Street building in 1998.
